Amika Kushwaha
Vancouver
Amika performs Kathak with live classical accompaniment. Few Kathak artists in Canada do this consistently. She co-curates the Mushtari Begum Festival of Indian Classical Music and Dance with the tabla artist and ghazal singer Cassius Khan. The festival runs in the Lower Mainland since 2012. It is one of the longest-running platforms for Indian classical arts in British Columbia. Amika performs Kathak across the region. She appeared at Jack Poole Plaza and at the Massey Theatre.
Fiana Kawane
Vancouver
Fiana Kawane is a Kathak artist in Vancouver. She has trained in the form for twenty years. Part of that training was at Kadamb, the institute that Kumudini Lakhia founded in Ahmedabad. Her recent work takes Kathak out of the theatre. In 2024 she joined the New Works Share Dance program in the Downtown Eastside, and she led a dance inquiry project at an elementary school in Hastings-Sunrise through the Artist-in-Residence Studio program. She has adapted work for outdoor sites with Dance West, and she has held a residency with Dance Victoria. She performs and creates work. She does not run public classes.
Ghungroo Kathak Academy

Ghungroo Kathak Academy is a school in Surrey. It is affiliated with Pracheen Kala Kendra, one of the best-known classical-arts institutions in India. The students write certified exams every year. The academy teaches traditional Kathak. It also teaches Bollywood-Kathak fusion. It runs online classes for students outside the region. By enrolment it is one of the largest Kathak schools in the Lower Mainland. It has several dozen students at different levels.
Kavital Dance School
Burnaby
Alka Goel-Stevens and Shelina Virani founded Kavital in January 1987. It is one of the longest-running Indian classical dance schools in the Lower Mainland. The school is in Burnaby. It teaches Bharata Natyam and Kathak. The teaching grounds students in classical technique. It also builds a community around Indian dance in British Columbia. The school holds student recitals and graduations.
Palak Dhiman

Palak is a Kathak artist, educator, and collaborator in Vancouver. She performed at festivals in Canada, the United States, India, and Nepal. In 2024 she presented her first full solo at Place des Arts in Coquitlam. She now teaches the first ongoing Kathak course at Place des Arts, for youth and adults. She also gives private classes and online classes. Her classroom is warm, respectful, and inclusive. She teaches Kathak as a living storytelling form, and not only as a sequence of steps. New students from across the Lower Mainland are welcome.
Prajakta Trehan (Nrityanjali Dance School)

Prajakta Trehan is a Kathak dancer from India. She now lives in Surrey. She teaches students at her Nrityanjali Dance School in the Newton Cultural Centre. The school ran for several years. Families in South Surrey, Newton, and Cloverdale can find a teacher near home at this school. Prajakta performed Kathak in India and in other countries. She performs with other Kathak artists in the Lower Mainland. She danced duets at the Mushtari Begum Festival.
Puneet Singh

Puneet Singh is a Kathak artist in Surrey. He dances in the Lucknow gharana. He began with Divya Goswami, a student of Munna Shukla. He now studies under Mahua Shankar, a senior disciple of Birju Maharaj, and he has taken the Ganda Bandh, the ceremony that formalises that discipleship. He performs with live musicians, among them the sitarist Gurjit Sikri and the tabla and pakhawaj player Hriday Buddhdev. In 2025 he danced at the Evergreen Cultural Centre in Coquitlam and at the Scotiabank Dance Centre in Vancouver, both in the Traditional India Series of the Bandish Network. He practises at the Guildford Recreation Centre. He performs and creates work. He does not run public classes.
Sri Shakti Academy Vancouver
North Vancouver
Sri Shakti Academy Vancouver is the British Columbia branch of Sri Shakti Academy. Ms. Neesha Jhaveri founded the original academy in Hong Kong. The academy teaches the Jankiprasad style of the Benaras Gharana of Kathak. It is on the North Shore. It runs regular classes, workshops, camps, and lecture-demonstrations across the Lower Mainland. The teaching covers technique, theory, and the spiritual lineage of the form. Families in North Vancouver and West Vancouver can reach the classes without a bridge crossing.
TheiTaal Dance Academy
Vancouver
TheiTaal Dance Academy teaches Kathak and Bharatanatyam. It gives classes and workshops in Vancouver. The academy is a community space for both classical Indian forms.
